Question: Are there any benefits to speaking Chinese if I don’t live in China?
Ruby Mei Le ：I speak two Chinese dialects and live in Canada. First, Canadians absolutely do not like to hear people speaking Chinese in public — we’re criticized for not assimilating. I speak Chinese because I enjoy speaking Chinese. I also speak Chinese because I speak to my parents in Chinese — not that I have to. Apart from those two reasons, I don’t need to speak Chinese. So, no, there isn’t really any benefit for you. Btw, the majority of foreigners in China can’t speak any Chinese and don’t care to learn. They expect people in China to speak to them in English.
Kyle Ren ： That depends. If you are an Asian, nothing will happen, people will think like “Damn, Chinese spread all over the world.” 。If you are not an Asian, maybe you can get a job about doing business with Chinese and people will consider you as talented in language because they think you can learn and speak this goddamn difficult language. And people will think you can hold everything with chopsticks, this is awesome.
