Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of small statues depicting infantrymen, cavalry, and performers in a 2,100-year-old pit in China. The remarkable find bears semblance to the famous Terracotta Army built for China’s first emperor, Quin Shi Huang, though in miniature form.

Experts estimate the more recently-found miniature army was made about 100 years after the Terracotta Army, and may have been built for the Qi prince, Liu Hong, according to Live Science.

In addition to the roughly 300 infantry statues found at the center of the pit in a square formation, researchers also found miniature watchtowers, each standing 55 inches tall (140 centimeters), according to Live Science.

This arrangement suggests the pit goes along with a burial site for someone of high status. In the paper, published to the journal Chinese Cultural relics, the researchers say ‘vehicles, cavalry, and infantry in square formation were reserved for burials of the monarchs or meritorious officials or princes.’

John : I see there is NO suggestion that the find is just a set of TOY soldiers for a little boy, it MUST foretell and mark the burial of a prince.
Avanice : A couple of miles away from this extravaganza of terracotta by the side of the highway are premises where these objects are made. After visiting the main site I was taken to the pottery for a hard sell session and was offered what appeared to be statues that looked, felt and were dirt/dust covered identically to the excavated site back up the road. It really made me wonder if the hard sell wasn’t really made at the site. Chinese antiquities are variable in age.
Jeanne : What a truly fascinating country China is.
commonsense : A half size terracota army was known about when I visited China 30 years ago.
DolittlE3Dark LadyDa : Is it true that they will never un earth the actual tomb, because of the posible pollution inside.
Ida McMullen : Maybe a prototype.
Sean : Looks like an aerial photograph of Jonestown.
William TimNew POV : I like History, it’s a book where part of the story is you discovering it and learn from it. Humans are very good at tasks of the times.
FloridianMartin : I find this more fascinating and impressive than the Egyptian pyramids.
OpinionsFromMEGmagja : All they need is the spell to bring them to life.
IrulanCorrino29DM151 : Fascinating ! Would love to see these in a museum sometime.
Martin : When you think that slaves build the pyramids under UN-imaginable conditions, how many died? I think I prefer this little soldiers as well.
magjay : When i saw them 30 years ago it looked like a freeze-framed film and at a flick of a switch the soldiers would be on the march again – incredible.
DM1519 : It¿s definitely worth seeing them. I flew to Xi¿an to see them 10 years ago and found them really impressive and awe inspiring. I will go back one day as more objects are being unearthed every year. I met the old farmer who found the first helmet when drilling a well. He signed a copy of his book at the museum. He has now passed away only recently. The trip to China was wonderful.
