wraggj-09324 : This isn’t the first film to have a grossly misleading trailer. it skews the audience by attracting an audience to the expectations driven by the trailer, and keeping away those who would actually enjoy the real story. It is a dark, dystopian semi-fantasy with interesting, well-played characters and a terrific visual style. I largely based my 8-stars on its appearance, which let me forgive the weakness of the mostly wasted clown scenes and the plot holes. The lead is a disturbed (for good reason) young man with a highly stressful life. Top level production design. The plot twists and betrayals are well done, and plausible, under the dark fantasy circumstances. I hope there is a sequel, and if so, maybe the clown aspect will be important. If not, then it is largely a waste of screen time. Film fans who are also mathematicians will have an extra dimension to enjoy.
druiz-38703 : Im not gonna lie, when I first saw the trailer I was excited to see the movie, then I had the chance and it was not even close to what I expected. But at the end it was a really good movie. No regrets
nobelmansour : Most of everything is related to each other, how everything that happens is not a random plot twist that is just a time-filler with no relation to the story. I also enjoyed looking at him doing the game strategies, it’s really entertaining to have them strategizing right in front of you. Plus, the effects are great! The story is pretty well made, and, the sequel isn’t out yet. Even though most of the characters are not very developed, the movie still gets you excited for what happens next.
Aktham_Tashtush : Well first I gotta give it to the visual effects guys .. WOW ,.. even though it had little to do with the real story of the plot .. it added an amazing colorful style that transfer you into a Chinese Deadpool effect… and the set itself was all classic musty dirty cage fight style .. loved it.The story might sound ridiculous at first ,,well it might be .. but still they presented with such thrill and edginess it actually looked like one of these famous poker movies like “21” or “Casino Royale” i really didn’t htink i’d enjoy it that much .. i mean it might have been a bit long .. but that’s how the chinese production usually works .. anyway .. the surprise is .. there will be a second part of the movie ..The cast were phenomenal ,, Yi Feng Li was so convincing and did really well .. Michael Douglas did good too .. being the old evil guy .. the movie had a lot of nationalities in the cast .. and they all did wel-.Final thought ,, you might think it’s silly , but it is not .. it is reco
linkus-88363 : Animal World is the Chinese adaptation of the Japanese film Kaiji Ultimate Gambler. The effects in this film are extremely good. It’s used in a way which highlights impact moments and helps the film explain its logic based obstacles. Not everyone will be able to follow the logic unfortunately. The film does it’s best to explain to the audience but does not slow down. My partner who is a native mandarin speaker said she got lost at times, so it wasn’t really the language that was the problem. I really enjoyed the puzzle / riddle type thinking exercises the movie places in front of you. The characters aren’t built up or developed and lack substance. The film isn’t focused on that. It uses that as a background to set the stage for the main part of the film. Once it starts though, the film managed to me engaged and excited looking forward to what happens next. Through clever use of special effects and camera work, you get to enjoy some well executed cinematography. I would actually recomme
ramonster_uk : I really wanted to love this movie, first Chinese movie I have seen in the cinema for years, but ultimately I was let down.So yeah, the visuals are good, great even! Sadly this is style over substance. It was like mathematics, matrix style in parts (watch it and you will see what I mean). Sadly, I do not speak Chinese, so reading the subs and trying to make sense of the math proved just too confusing in parts. Either way though, wasn’t really missing much in terms of a good story.Could have been so much better, or just completely different and better in all fairness.Won’t be watching it again, but I am interested in watching a sequel, just to see if it gets any better. 5 at best here from me
edgy-827-486965 : Much better than japanese one, and very close to anime series, but have more darker tone and I really like it. Scenes with clown… well its intertaining and its original plot-line and I really can’t seat 2+ hours without this scenes. Its a good idea, but not all can understand this. So its very good… remake? I think.
mollicadavide : It reminded me a bit Sucker Punch, the protagonist dissociation create a parallel universe.
thefewtheproudanilo : The movie is visually stoning, but it lacks in story. The trailer forgot to show that 80% of the movie is about a rock, paper, scissor tournament. No fighting, no ninja clown, no car chase, even i can make a better movie than this come on.
blackseakt : It was quite different than the original Kaiji. I did not know what to expect when I saw the weird clown fights, but in the end they were a nice dark addition to the story, can’t say the same about the other elements. The worst thing for me was that I could not see Kai Si’s ultimate despair mode, and that is a bit lacking because that was the moment when Kaiji came up with all of his greatest ideas. And of course, I missed the “zawa zawa” onomatopoeia, as a mark of Nobuyuki Fukumoto.
fits-47019 : This should be an AWFUL film. It SHOULD, but it isn’t. It’s actually quite good! The trailer and poster for this film are LIES. I was promised an insane ninja clown superhero fighting evil shape-shifting monsters in a futuristic cityscape, instead what I got was a 1.5 hour lesson on mathematical probability and game theory. The plot is pure nonsense, Michael Douglas is in this for no reason whatsoever, oh, and the movie is 80% exposition! None of it should work at all, but Animal World is so visually clever and the performances from everyone not named Michael Douglas are so gripping that all the flaws and absurdities seem quite small and ‘nit-picky’ in comparison. My one main gripe is right at the last minute, where they abandon what could have been a decent ending in favor of trying to set up a completely unnecessary sequel. Why?! It’s like the underdog getting to the finish line in first place against all odds and then simply refusing to cross it.
TheBigSick : The plot of this film is disposable, and most of the illusory scenes are merely disturbing. There are too many voice-overs. The setting and tone are kind of weird and inconsistent throughout the film. A supposedly interesting thriller just turns out to pretentious and groundless.
BatmanFunReviews2018 : A man finds himself deep in debt and is coerced to board a ship that hosts a risky gambling party. Dongwu Shijie is the exact same mistake that ‘Escape Plan 2: Hades’ was since you basically have an actor who is making billions of dollars from Marvel movies and somehow agreed to star in this fantasy, action mistake of a film. Michael Douglas deserved more than a screen time of how long? 10 minutes or perhaps less too? Just like Bautista did in Escape Plan. This movie was just all over the place and one that wastes a very great actor, insulting.
Kacers : I went in without knowing what to expect… now that I’ve watched it, I can certainly say it was nothing I could’ve imagined. Really unique and interesting plot. A bit weird in the beginning but it was really well done over all. Without spoiling anything- it’s definitely a must watch. It’s like mystery mixed w animation Tarantino and had a nice moral story in it. Quite enjoyable. Wasn’t a big fan of having to watch the movie w English subtitles but at least there were some scenes with Spoken English.
robertandrews-63249 : Superb visuals, fun action and a totally original story. Just watch it
Leofwine_draca : ANIMAL WORLD is another blockbuster flick from mainland China that uses the same manga source inspiration as the Japanese flick KAIJI: THE ULTIMATE GAMBLER. The story is ostensibly about a young, debt-ridden man who boards a prison ship where the contestants are tasked with playing a massive tournament game of ‘scissors paper stone’ with dire consequences for the losers. Of course the mega-rich bet on the outcomes and imported Hollywood star Michael Douglas is the big bad. The most amusing thing about this overlong, overblown movie is the addition of lots of random CGI-enhanced action sequences in which our youthful hero turns into a superhero clown and battles evil, gooey aliens through the streets of China. There’s a crazy car chase and a fight on a train, and both have nothing to do with the central storyline but are the most fun things about this. Overall, it’s rather disjointed, but its success in China means that a sequel’s planned.
crovax188 : As a fan who read the manga and saw the Japanese version of the movie. I feel this is better and interesting to watch as it builds the character before the showdown.Even though I knew what was coming, they did a few things extra that the Japanese and manga doesn’t have.I hope there is a chinese version with such quality for “Liar Game”
xtruefinale : The film can be described as one of those fantasy/mystery/thriller genres that a mass entertainment consumer such as myself will recognize, games/shows like Steins Gate (visual novel, anime), No Game No Life (anime), 999 (video game). The film delivers enough tension for most audiences to be hooked on/watch to the end. Really high end visual graphics (CGI) and attempt along the way to show some character development and smart writing/or explained thinking of our protagonist.Sadly as an entertaining film as it is, it feels like sometimes the use of high quality CGI was more an excuse rather than an enhancement. The story seems to come across as pretentiously wanting to create some depth/mystery but fails to deliver on these so in example to previously works of the same genre. The protagonist is seeming meant to be portrayed to be a cunning, playful and at times cool in anime tropes, but I fail to identify/admire him when the film comes to a conclusion.A good entertainment cheese to watch
martimus-559 : My favorite Anime is Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji and so I watched this movie to in a way find out they just tried to hard to get away from the anime with these more Deadpool like effects and a different personality, that’s also why many said it would be like Deadpool but it isn’t anything like it!
amkprince : It’s great… they did the “cg” in somewhat way but they have done the story better than the original story and this is some thing that i didn’t expect at all after seeing.. the adaptation of Japanese series like “death note” or “Dragon ball” …. and many more …. i think it’s the best so far and i prefer it more than the original story… and for your information i love the original story and it’s hard to make a movie that is more good than a great story
amelieliuxin : I watched this movie on Netflix tonight. When I saw the poster I didn’t expect that this movie is such dramatic artist way. At the first place I did notice the visual effect is trying too hard to make people to feel a little uncomfortable and distracted. I only thing I think about when I watch all this visual effects is “This is an expensive movie”. After I almost finished the film, I oddly started to like this style; I admit that no film use visual effect, CGI that often and random. I know the director wants to create a film in an artist way or just makes this film experience. It is a good thing for CHinese film that we start to try to do something big I guess. I can’t say I love or hate the exaggerate CGI, I treated it more like an unique story telling method. Once I think in that way, I start to enjoy it. Overall, this movie is worth to watch. Very interesting story and good acting! But just a heads up, if you hate math, probably it’s not a good idea to watch this film.
Wizard-8 : Thanks to Netflix, I have sampled Chinese cinema and television shows, and I have found them interesting enough that I keep my eyes open for new offerings that come on that streaming service. This particular one interested me, since they managed to wrangle a major Hollywood star (Michael Douglas) into appearing in it, even though it was only essentially a extended cameo.I’ll get to the point quickly as to what my thoughts were on the movie: extremely mixed. First, the good stuff. Technically the movie looks first rate, very slickly made with professional production values that could have been accomplished by Hollywood filmmakers. The movie is pretty fast paced, with a story that has some original touches I can’t recall seeing in a movie before. But while the script has some original touches, it also has its share of faults. The opening of the movie is quite confusing, feeling like it’s a story starting at chapter two or three. And while the central story eventually starts to make sense,
z-07711 : The hospital part is wired but totally it’s a good movie
dennis_mcdougal : The movie had a good plot, kept me interested the whole time.
annique-83019 : It’s not a superhero movie, or the matrix. It’s a story of a man who is lost, and is discovering his true self. Parts of it is presented through his mind, and it is surreal. His actions though will give you faith in human nature. Looking out for number one will not ensure victory. Don’t worry, there is tons of action, and I probably haven’t properly conveyed what I wanted to, but I don’t want to give spoilers. I can’t wait for the second movie.
hansser : This movie about a guy who thinks hes a clown and sometimes can’t tell if what he saw was real or not. Well it was always fake, just in his mind thinking, which was nice but when he tried to do what he thought of, he failed. Clearly letting me know that he is not the clown. Instead the movie takes you to this ship to play a (Hunger games like) Rock,Paper, Sissors. Not saw this coming, it was a great scenario to play out. I thought it was risky but only showed 1 person actually killed. The rest lab rats. Now where does the clown comes into play in the movie…. Never hes just a cartoon character he thought of whenever he was scared. Well that is just plain misleading. I know i missed alot but the movie trailer showed only great scenes that had nothing to actually do in the movie.
ersbel : The action scenes are rather fast paced for a video game from the 1990s. Yet they are seldom and far apart. In between there is a lot of slow moving plot and weird dialogues.Maybe this was meant for the Chinese market only and their tastes are different. I don’t know.
